Extensive resort incorporating several smaller
boroughs set among low-lying hills facing a succession of beaches. In
the centre, Albufeira has retained its charm and still functions
commercially as a fishing village. The main square is surrounded by
cobblestone streets with fishermens houses and an antiquated stone
tunnel leading to the beach. Daytime: very little of historic interest
to see although there are several churches in the old part of town.
Most of the holiday complexes have their own sporting facilities but
an abundance of water sports can be found at the beaches. Large marine
park in Guia (5 miles) with dolphins, walrus, sea lions, swimming
pools and fair rides for children; the park operates a bus service
bookable from most receptions. Nightlife: an abundance of bars, many
British-owned, and several discos. Vilamoura casino 9 miles distant.
